Louis Moinet: Artistic & Creative Luxury Watches

Watches from Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Louis Moinet stand out for their unique craftsmanship and world-class technology. Premium materials and unmatched designs make them perfect accessories for special occasions.

Outstanding Luxury Watches

The story of Louis Moinet began back in the 18th century, when the company was founded by a watchmaker of the same name. Moinet found fame in 1816, when he presented the world's first chronograph. The Compteur de Tierces was capable of measuring times to one-sixtieth of a second. His other early works included exquisite grandfather clocks, which were particularly popular with aristocratic figures and politicians.

The Louis Moinet brand was dormant for a long time. In fact, it wasn't until the early 2000s that Swiss marketing specialist Jean-Marie Schaller founded Les Ateliers Louis Moinet SA as an independent watch production company, which he now manages. Since then, Louis Moinet has been highly regarded on the global stage for their outstanding craftsmanship and innovative designs. Tucked away in the Swiss town of Saint-Blaise, the company manufactures high-quality and highly complicated timepieces, often reaching for exotic materials such as rock fragments from the surface of Mars and the Moon. Cutting-edge technologies from the company's own facilities top off Louis Moinet's exclusive range of timepieces.

Among the manufacturer's coveted collections are the Memoris, Tempograph, and Tourbillon lines. You'll find visually and technically impressive features in creations such as the Astronef and Black Gold Derrick. Louis Moinet timepieces are strictly limited, and some models are even one-of-a-kind. With so much exclusivity, it is a matter of course that the manufacturer uses only in-house calibers.

How much does a Louis Moinet watch cost?

The most affordable route to a Louis Moinet watch is through the pre-owned market. For about 5,500 USD, you can buy a used Adonis Duograph. The Louis Moinet Geograph made of stainless steel will bump that figure up to 8,700 USD. If you're interested in a Tempograph made of titanium, you'll need to have close to 17,000 USD on hand, but the rose gold version will set you back 30,000 USD. Complicated timepieces are considerably more expensive, one example being the Space Mystery for 155,000 USD. At the upper end of the spectrum are the Space Revolution Double Tourbillon and the Astronef, which sell for 320,000 and 400,000 USD, respectively.

Memoris: Spoiled For Choice

Louis Moinet's portfolio centers around the Mechanical Wonders collection. This collection contains the Tourbillons, Memoris, Time to Race, and Tempograph lines. All watches are produced in strictly limited numbers.

The Memoris chronograph collection is home to the Spirit, Original, Life, Superlight, and Red Eclipse subseries, each of which offers various models in different material and color combinations. The Memoris Superlight is the only model to be available in just one version. Memoris watches use the in-house calibers LM86, LM84, or LM79. The balance of each oscillates at 28,800 vph and all offer a 48-hour power reserve. The time is indicated by a miniature dial at 6 o'clock, while the subdials for the chronograph function can be found at 3 and 9. The push-piece at 2 o'clock sets the chronograph in motion.

Memoris Spirit

The Memoris Spirit line has six different models, all of which measure 40.7 mm across. Of course, these timepieces are extremely exclusive; only between 28 and 60 copies were made of each reference. When it comes to the case material, you can choose between 18-karat rose gold or titanium. You'll notice that each watch has a different color pallet for the dial and base plate, ranging from silver to blue to mustard yellow. The Memoris Spirit is powered by the caliber LM84.

One interesting model is the Memoris Spirit ref. LM-84.50.21. It features a silver dial and is paired with a black leather strap. Only 28 copies of this rose gold timepiece exist, and it requires an investment of around 47,000 USD.

Another watch in this line worth considering is the ref. LM-84.20.31. This timepiece has a mustard yellow base plate and comes on a dark green leather strap. Prices sit around 38,000 USD.

Memoris Original

There are eleven models in the Memoris Original collection. Louis Moinet produced between 6 and 60 examples of each reference. The watches have a 46-mm case made of 18-karat rose or white gold. The dial and base plate are finished in blue, green, red, pink, black, or white. All Memoris Originals are mounted on a black leather strap and use the in-house caliber LM79.

The ref. LM-54.50.80 was limited to a production run of just 60 copies. It is crafted from rose gold and features a white dial with a silver base plate. In August 2023, there was only one listing for this Louis Moinet timepiece on Chrono24 for 25,000 USD.

Memoris Life

The Memoris Life collection underscores Louis Moinet's modern aspirations. The models in this series are the Vesuvio (yellow), Alaska (blue), Yucatán (green), Borneo (dark red), Amazona (light red), and Olympia (bronze). Although the watches in this line are very much modeled on the classic Memoris style, the dial and the leather straps, which match each dial color, exude a certain dynamism and modernity. The case of each Memoris Life timepiece is 46 mm in diameter, crafted from titanium, and houses the automatic chronograph caliber LM86.

All Memoris Life models demanded around 35,000 USD on Chrono24 in August 2023.

Memoris Superlight

The models in the Memoris Superlight series weigh in at only 31 grams, excluding the strap, making them the lightest in the Memoris collection. Louis Moinet achieved this feat by opting for titanium as the material for the 46-mm case, and modifying the construction of the movement. The chronograph was separated from the automatic mechanism; all 147 of the chronograph's components sit on the base plate, while the automatic mechanism is tucked away below. The caliber LM79 has a total of 311 components and a 48-hour power reserve.

Every version of the Memoris Superlight is limited to only 28 copies. They were produced in light blue, orange, purple, black, dark blue, brown, and green. The purple ref. LM-79.20.17 was listed on Chrono24 for 35,000 USD in August 2023.

Tempograph Spirit 20 Seconds

There are four different versions of the Louis Moinet Tempograph Spirit 20 Seconds, though they all share a 40.7-mm case and the automatic caliber LM85. Two references are crafted from 18-karat rose gold, while the other two are made of titanium.

The Tempograph Spirit offers a retrograde display for the hours and minutes, as well a retrograde 20-second mechanism for timing 20-second intervals. This function is complemented by an interesting detail at 9 o'clock: a counter divided into red, black, and blue sections to mark the three 20-second sequences that make up each minute. The subdial at four o'clock indicates the hours and minutes.

The Tempograph Spirit LM-85.20.50 is made of titanium and had a limited production run of only 60 pieces. The price for a new copy on Chrono24 is around 25,000 USD. The rose gold version demands north of 50,000 USD.

Time to Race

The Time to Race collection consists of one-of-a-kind pieces, i.e., there is only one copy of each reference. All the watches share a 40.7-mm titanium case and are powered by the automatic in-house caliber LM96. This movement has 311 components and a 48-hour power reserve. The displays for the chronograph are at 3 and 9 o'clock, while the current time is read from the dial at 6. The monopusher is operated by a push-piece at 2 o'clock. Framing the dial is a tachymeter scale, the first quarter of which is filled with a different color on each model. The stop seconds hand and the hand for the 60-minute display are executed in the same color.

You have the choice between yellow, red, blue, light green, and orange. The straps also come in dark green and black. However, customization doesn't end there: You can choose to have your lucky number at the center of the white dial at 6 o'clock, as long as it's between 0 and 99.

Expect prices for customized Time to Race models to come in around 40,000 USD.

Models With Tourbillons

The Tourbillon collection is home to a range of highly complicated luxury timepieces with tourbillons. Particularly popular lines include the Impulsion, Derrick, and Astronef.

The Astronef is a rose gold timepiece measuring 43.5 mm across. Its defining feature is the fact that it has two tourbillons rotating above the dial at two different levels. The sophisticated mechanics behind the scenes allow the twin tourbillons to meet every 3 minutes and 20 seconds. The action takes place in a case with an elevated sapphire crystal so that the spectacle can be admired unobstructed.

The manual in-house caliber LM105 is what makes all this possible. The complex structure consists of 471 parts and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. The balance frequency is a bit lower than the manufacturer's other movements at 21,600 vph. The masterpiece is limited to 8 copies and demands some 405,000 USD.

Impulsion

The Impulsion collection consists of only three limited-edition tourbillon watches made of titanium and rose gold. Examples include the ref. LM-114.40.20 and ref. LM-114.40.50. Only 28 copies of each of these references exist. They differ mostly by the colors of the titanium inner case as well as the straps. While these elements are blue on the LM-114.40.20, they are black on the LM-114.40.50.

The 42.5-mm rose gold case houses the manual in-house caliber LM114, which has a flying tourbillon. The monopusher movement boasts a 96-hour power reserve, while the balance oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vph. You'll find the subdials for the chronograph function at 3 and 9 o'clock. The tourbillon spins at the bottom of the dial at 6 o'clock. You can choose to pair the watch with a black or blue strap; prices will come in around 155,000 USD regardless.

Black Gold Derrick

With the Black Gold Derrick, Louis Moinet unites watchmaking with the oil industry. The Black Gold Derrick is a visual as well as a technical masterpiece; the movement of the 45.4-mm white gold watch represents the drilling process. There is a drive shaft between 2 and 4 o'clock. The drive shaft powers a long articulated arm, or walking beam, between 10 and 2 o'clock. At the left end, you'll see the elongated "head," which is the most striking feature of a derrick. The circuit ends with a titanium barrel at 9 o'clock that is constantly rotating, symbolizing successful oil extraction.

The exclusive manual caliber LM14D is to thank for this feast for the eyes. The movement has a 72-hour power reserve and oscillates at a frequency of 21,000 vph. In August 2023, there was one listing for the Black Gold Derrick on Chrono24 for 320,000 USD.

Mecanograph: The Affordable Louis Moinet

One of Louis Moinet's earlier collections is the Mechanograph. The ref. LM-31.20.50 is an interesting model from 2014. This timepiece has a 43.5-mm titanium case and can usually only be found in pre-owned condition. Mechanograph watches are relatively affordable in comparison with the brand's other creations, and are a great place to start with your collection.

The most distinctive feature on the LM-31.20.50 is its dial. The right side of the dial is black with a deep wave pattern, while the right side is skeletonized to reveal the COSC-certified LM31.02 below. The seconds are displayed via a thin frame at 9 o'clock. The movement is the result of a collaboration between Louis Moinet and Concepto, a manufacturer of high-quality movements. It oscillates at 28,800 vph and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. Prices for this watch in good condition run between 9,300 and 18,000 USD.

Super Moon, Mars Mission & Space One

Some of the lines in the Louis Moinet Cosmic Art collection are the Super Moon, Mars Mission, and Space One.

The Super Moon ref. LM-75.10B.MO-A is a 43.5-mm stainless steel timepiece that was limited to 100 pieces. Again, the stand-out feature of this watch is its dial: It represents the first extraterrestrial view of the Moon as seen by Apollo 8 in 1968. The replication was engraved by hand with a brushed finish to create the light and dark hues for the peaks and pits of the Moon's surface. At the 3 o'clock position is the "void," and above it, a small lunar meteorite fragment, taken from one of the only 371 lunar meteorites known to exist. The dial is skeletonized between 8 and 12 o'clock to reveal the escapement of the automatic caliber LM45. The power reserve is 48 hours.

The Super Moon is mounted on a blue leather strap and costs around 22,000 USD new.

Mars Mission

If you're more interested in Mars, you might enjoy the Louis Moinet Mars Mission ref. LM-75.10B.MA-C. This time, the dial design is inspired by photos sent to NASA by the Mariner 4 probe in 1965. The dial is handcrafted and coated with copper. As with the Super Moon, there is a "void" above 3 o'clock, including a fragment extracted from one of the 277 Martian meteorites. The Mars Mission uses the caliber LM45, which is also used in the Super Moon and comes on a black leather strap. Expect prices for the Mars Mission to come in around 22,000 USD.

Space One

The Louis Moinet Space One ref. LM-88.20.60 is another timepiece inspired by outer space. The 46-mm monopusher is made of titanium and weights only 102 grams including the strap. The chronograph has a silver dial with subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock. The chronograph's status (stop, start, and reset) is displayed at 4:30.

The small seconds and 30-minute counter feature a fragment of the Armanty meteorite that has been lightly tinted blue. Each counter is topped with a ruby chaton created using the Verneuil method, or flame fusion. This is a reference to the lights that indicate an imminent launch. The Space One is powered by the caliber LM30, which has a 48-hour power reserve.

In August 2023, there was one listing for the Louis Moinet Space One on Chrono24 for 29,000 USD.
