This is a beautiful Angelus Chronodato with triple calendar in a gold plated steel case. I particularly like the size of 38 mm. That's pretty big for a vintage watch.
I bought the watch about 7 years ago from Knightsbridge Watches London. This dealer sold the watch refurbished. As I wasn't sure how well it was made, I had another movement overhaul done by my local watch dealer in Rapperswil (Fumagalli).
Beforehand I bought a watchmaker's book explaining this movement step by step (World's only fully illustrated Chronograph Watch Course Volume 26) from 1951, which is part of this sale.
The watch is in fantastic condition. All functions run flawlessly and visually it is a dream. The pictures show the watch and they are not edited. It is incredible how the zoom function enhances small scratches that are not visible to the naked eye, and the gold also shines more in nature.

how CAN this watch be dated?

Angelus dates back to 1891, but in 1942 launched the Chronodate, the world's first series chronograph with a calendar. Only Patek Philippe had previously produced such wristwatches, and in tiny numbers. The name was changed to Chronodato in 1943, and it became Angelus' best-selling model. In the 1950s, it was replaced by the Chrono Datoluxe large date model, which, however, lost the month display. This watch must therefore have been made between 1943 and 1950.

Description

The Chronodato was made in either stainless steel, gold plated steel or solid 15 or 18 carat gold, this one is the gold plated version. There were different types of dials and lugs, and this model has the non-luminous hands and dial. The dial is original and has very little patina. The movement is Angelus caliber 217 and features a 30-minute chronograph with column wheel that is operated by the pushers on the right side of the case, as well as a date hand, a window for the day of the week and the month in English. Each of these elements can be quickly adjusted via the pushers at 6.30, 9 and 12.30 on the case, and everything works perfectly.
