Piaget Polo

The history of the Polo collection stretches back to 1979, when the luxury watch manufacturer Piaget released early models. Success followed almost immediately, with the solid 18-karat gold model gaining in popularity during the 1980s. Thanks to its integrated bracelet and deep horizontal fluting, it looks like one solid piece. The legendary caliber 7P powers this timepiece. At the time, it was the world's flattest quartz movement.

Despite being inspired by the game of polo, the original Polo watch was more of a dress watch than a sporty timepiece. However, this all changed with the introduction of the Polo FortyFive at the turn of the millennium. The case grew to 45 mm in diameter and was made of titanium or stainless steel. What's more, these watches were powered by automatic in-house calibers, some of which featured flyback chronograph and GMT functions.

The Polo S is one of the most recent Polo models. This 42-mm stainless steel timepiece is available as a simple three-hand watch or chronograph. Perhaps the most notable detail of these watches is the flattened round bezel, which offers an interesting contrast to the cushion-shaped dial. The design is elegant yet sporty, meaning you can wear this watch during the day and keep it on for an evening out.

If you're on the market for a particularly flat, uniquely charming vintage watch, look no further than the first generation of Piaget Polo watches. These quartz watches are made of solid 18-karat gold, from the case to the bracelet. You can choose from a variety of different models; for example, there are some with a round dial and others with a rectangular case. They range in size from 28 to 36 mm. You'll find a wide array of two-hand watches and timepieces with day-date displays. For something especially elegant, Piaget also created models set with numerous diamonds.

Well-maintained models with two hands and a round or rectangular dial cost around 5,000 USD. Prices for those with a day-date display fall between 6,600 and 7,800 USD.

The Polo collection received an update in the early 2000s. These newer watches are 45 mm in diameter and made of titanium and stainless steel. Instead of a bracelet, an integrated rubber strap holds the watch securely on the wrist. More changes took place on the inside, with automatic in-house calibers replacing their quartz predecessors.

The three-hand models are available with a white silver-plated or black dial. Broad wedge-shaped indices, an oversized date window at 6, and large Arabic numerals at 4, 8, and 12 o'clock dominate the face of these timepieces. Plan to spend around 10,000 USD on a never-worn Polo FortyFive. Pre-owned watches sell for as little as 4,700 USD. The 38-mm women's edition with a diamond-studded bezel requires a much larger investment of roughly 20,000 USD.

There's also a chronograph version of the FortyFive available. It boasts a flyback function, date, and second time zone thanks to the in-house caliber 880P. A subdial with a 24-hour scale at 9 o'clock allows you to tell the time in another part of the world. You can quickly set this display using the push-piece at 10 o'clock. There's also a date window at 12, a chronograph counter at 3, and a small seconds dial at 6 o'clock.

Like the three-hand models, the Polo FortyFive Chronograph comes with your choice of a black or white dial. Mint-condition pieces demand around 14,000 USD. You can save around 2,200 USD by purchasing a pre-owned watch instead. Special editions like the G0A35001 with a skeletonized dial cost between 11,500 and 17,500 USD.

In 2016, Piaget introduced the Polo S, the first Polo watch to feature a stainless steel case. Standard features of this series include a cushion-shaped dial with horizontal guilloché engraving and a wide round bezel. The bezel is flattened and has a satin-brushed finish, which contrasts beautifully with the high-gloss polish of the case and bracelet. In terms of functionality, you can choose from a three-hand watch with a date display at 6 o'clock or a chronograph model, also with a date display. At release, both models were available with a blue, anthracite, or white dial. The current catalog doesn't contain any stainless steel models with a white dial; however, in its place is a three-hand timepiece with a green dial, the ref. G0A44001.

Piaget outfits three-hand versions with the automatic in-house caliber 1110P, while the chronograph edition gets its power from the caliber 1160P. This chronograph movement boasts a stopwatch function and subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock. While the Polo S with an anthracite dial is only available on a stainless steel bracelet, the variant with a blue dial comes on your choice of a stainless steel bracelet or blue alligator leather strap. A green alligator strap holds the green G0A44001 in place.

Depending on its condition, the three-hand model changes hands for between 7,500 and 9,000 USD. If you'd prefer the chronograph edition, plan to spend around 11,000 USD.

Today, the Polo S is also available in rose gold with a textured white dial. Certain models feature exquisite diamond embellishments as well. Materials aside, these timepieces are quite similar to the stainless steel models, from their cushion-shaped dials to their flat, satin-brushed bezels. They even use the same calibers as their more affordable counterparts. Regardless of which version you choose, your watch will come mounted on a blue alligator leather strap and include an additional tobacco-brown strap.

Prices for three-hand models start around 20,000 USD. The addition of diamonds to the bezel increases that price to about 33,000 USD. The collection's most luxurious timepiece has more than 550 diamonds across its dial and bezel and requires an investment of some 66,500 USD.
